Face Unlock feature of Ice Cream Sandwich, Tricked with a photo

November 12, 2011 | By Andro ID

A new feature has been launched for Ice Cream Sandwich. A front-facing camera taking a look at the person holding the phone, comparing that to registered users, and opened only if the two faces match. Ice Cream Sandwiches include a feature that allows users to unlock the phone just by looking at their device. Although the Android Developer Advocate Tim Bray said the photos would not be good enough to bypass the facial recognition, someone in a demos Galaxy Nexus has a video that appears to prove otherwise.

Having set the phone to recognize faces and then place a photo stored on the Notes Samsung Galaxy, Galaxy Nexus locked. Google has previously said that the picture will not cheat Unlock face, but as you can see from the video below, it's not entirely true.

One thing that is taken from some experience of attending a technology conference is that the device is in the hands never fully mature. They have flaws still to be addressed, the feature has not been properly implemented, and should not be assessed fully until we see the retail version of the product.

In terms of nominal Enable is easy to cheat, you will be disappointed. some people use this feature only for new things / convenience and not for security as others have suggested. even some that did not use the pin / pattern on the screen right now because they want quick access to the phone. However, it would be a disappointment to see the features that are promises so easily circumvented.

There are two possible explanations for this:

  • Maybe Google is tested with images that have been printed more than one on the screen and does not anticipate that will happen (possible but not likely).
  • Maybe the test device at the show running pre-release software that does not have a face full complexity Enable built into it (more likely).
