Acer is the tagline for "Smartphone 100%, 100% Tablet", so the idea seemed that he was trying to be the best of both worlds, but not sure it works on both ends of the spectrum.
It also seems like it would make some tasks easier in portrait mode, although it is more difficult in landscape mode. And, either way you slice it, the media and the game will either stretch or surrounded by a black bar of wasted space.
As a phone, the form factor seems like a better idea than say Dell Streak 5, because the length makes it easier to slip in your pocket. The press release claims that "you can watch movies in their original format, to experience cinema-like fun", but the film is shot in 16:9, not 21:09. That said, the clips on the hands-on video does look pretty good.
